Kenny Jackett: Wolves can cope without Karl Henry
Head coach Kenny Jackett today insisted Wolves can cope without Karl Henry after the midfielder's £1million move to Queens Park Rangers went through.
The 30-year-old former captain and longest-serving outfield player ended seven years at Molineux when he signed a two-year deal at Loftus Road yesterday.
Jackett took the decision to place Henry, Roger Johnson, Stephen Ward and Jamie O'Hara on the transfer list last month. And the boss maintained that forcing Henry out was right for the club and the player.
Jackett is also confident one of his young midfielders can replace the Wolverhampton-born enforcer.
Jackett said: "We wish him all the best. Personally I feel it was right for the club and right for the player to have a fresh challenge.
"On behalf of everyone at the club, I thank him for his service and we all wish him the very best at Queens Park Rangers."
Wolves made it five games unbeaten in pre-season with last night's 2-1 win at Chesterfield, their fourth victory.
Asked if he is happy with the options to fill the gap left by Henry, Jackett said: "Yes.
"We have some young players admittedly in David Davis, Lee Evans and Jack Price, and also the experience of Kevin Foley.
"He's been somewhat of a utility player but still looked capable when he came on last night.
"He's coming in off the back of an ankle injury but he put in an impressive cameo performance in the second half which shows me he can play a number of positions and be an asset.
"They're the people who are currently competing for the midfield area as well as Dave Edwards, who played a slightly more attacking midfield role which he's filled well so far."
After Price caught the eye on tour, it was the turn of Evans last night. The £200,000 signing from Newport County, 19 today, produced the pass of the match for Leigh Griffiths to score the 65th-minute winner.
It came after Drew Talbot had deservedly cancelled out Edwards's seventh-minute opener.
Jackett said: "Lee's signing was quite astute. He has a good physique, can impose himself on a game and, above anything, he has an enthusiasm to play for the club."
