Stale Solbakken admits Wolves are in crisis
Under-pressure manager Stale Solbakken today admitted Wolves are in crisis as he warned players and fans that past glories count for nothing.
Yesterday's 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace was Wolves' third in a row and left them four places and six points off the drop zone, and Solbakken believes the team has hit the wall.
They are now nine points off the play-offs and, with Wolves a massive 25 points below leaders Cardiff, automatic promotion looks a pipedream.
Many fans now believe Solbakken can't turn things around but the Norwegian insists he is the man to revive fortunes.
He said: "We are in a crisis now, no doubt about that. We have to dig very deep and not make excuses – at the moment we are a bad Championship team.
"We are in deep **** at the moment and have to get out of it, as soon as possible. Many of the players who were very good earlier in the season are struggling.
"We have hit the wall in many circumstances. Myself and the players have a responsibility to dig us out of this very big hole.
"But it's tough mentally for the players coming down from the Premier League."
Seven regular starters in the team have been promoted from the Championship. But Solbakken believes the second tier has moved on from 2008-09, when Wolves won the title.
He said: "That sentence is one of the most dangerous I hear in Wolverhampton. Football has changed very much since.
"There are so many examples that confirm you can't rest on things from the past and that what you did four or five years ago is good enough today – far from it."
Solbakken still doesn't fear for his job, saying: "I haven't heard anything that suggests anything different and I will certainly go on like I always have and try to turn it around."
But the Wolves boss admits the club's position could now affect his ability to bring players in this month.
He said: "We have to discuss things again with Mr Morgan and Mr Moxey as to what funds are available and what's possible."
