Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today declared he has owner Steve Morgan's backing to strengthen his squad in the transfer market.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said on Monday when addressing rumours that McCarthy had been sacked that the club was trying to bring in a third signing of the transfer window, which shuts next Tuesday.

McCarthy's chief target was defender Nedum Onuoha, who still hasn't completed his £3m move from Manchester City to QPR but has been offered a staggering package of up to £85,000-a-week at Loftus Road.

Wolves also want a striker but are believed to be cool on Bristol City hot-shot Nicky Maynard, who is in talks with Wigan about a reported £2.2m move.

McCarthy also ran his eye over Scottish midfielder and former Celtic and Norwich man Mark Fotheringham, 28, who scored on trial in a 2-0 win over Burnley at Compton yesterday.

McCarthy said: "Listen, if there was a player there for us to sign and it's one we can do then he (Morgan) is there to be supportive.

"But it is so, so difficult to get anyone. It's also difficult to get someone that comes in and fits straight into the team, on loan, although we got one in Manny Frimpong.

"If you take anyone from abroad, you really are taking a chance on them because they don't settle in straightaway.

"So trying to get someone in who's been in and around the Premier League, and understands it, is very hard."

As for Onuoha, McCarthy said: "I wouldn't talk about individual cases but City have agreed a fee for him, although I understand it's not done and dusted.

"I never put him in the script, did I?"

And the manager said he wasn't close to any more signings after the pre-deadline arrivals of Eggert Jonsson and Frimpong.

"No, there's nothing imminent, but we're still trying," he said.
