More than £1m has been invested into new state-of-the-art fibrelastic surfaces at Molineux and the first-team pitch at Compton.
New undersoil heating was installed in the summer, with new drainage.
McCarthy said: "It's not what I expected because we had it relaid in the summer but we both had to play on it." And McCarthy, who has insisted on a more direct approach of play recently, refused to blame it for his tactics.
