Disappointment shows what we're all about – Shrewsbury Town defender Matthew Pennington
Matthew Pennington admits Shrewsbury Town disappointment at just a point at Charlton highlights the winning mentality in the squad.
Town earned a point from a 1-1 draw at The Valley but could have turned it into three late on, but the visitors spurned a couple of gilt-edged chances.
Pennington returned to Shrewsbury's back three and delivered an inch-perfect cross for Sean Goss' opener, a superb diving header, after the break.
But Conor Washington was allowed on to his right foot to shoot in the Shrews penalty area amid a mass of bodies as the hosts levelled 12 minutes from time.
"Do you know what? The lads are a bit disappointed that we didn't get the three points there," Everton loan defender Pennington said.
"That shows what we're about, it shows we want to win games and I think we took the game to them.
"We're disappointed in the end but if we look back on it it's a decent point."
He added: "Everyone dug in, I thought the work ethic was bang at it, we've probably had a couple of games where we probably weren't at it as much for the full 90 minutes but for the most part, apart from the goal, the lads were on their game."
Pennington's cross for Goss' header, a third goal in five games for the midfielder, was a very well-worked move as Steve Cotterill's men made it a creditable four points on the road in a week.
Pennington, who has made clear his wish to join Shrewsbury permanently upon leaving Everton this summer, said: "I got a bit of space and whipped the ball in and Gossy's made a good run and got on the end of it nicely, it was a good goal.
"But it's a shame we couldn't hold on to it and win the game.
"It just came off today, there was space to step in and I saw Gossy had made a good run, so he made the decision for me.
"I've put it in and he's got on the end of it, which is great.
"There's a little bit more freedom in a back three to step in and get involved, it's something I enjoy doing and hopefully I can do more of it in the coming weeks."
