The Town chief can only take a watching brief from his Bristol hospital bed tonight as his side aim to topple Premier League high-flyers Southampton in the FA Cup.

Shrewsbury trained over the weekend while their manager was admitted into intensive care as he battles Covid-19.

“In the short time I’ve known him he’s got a massive presence, he’s come in here and shook things up a little bit and results have changed,” Norburn said of the manager, who is unbeaten in seven league games in charge since arriving in November. “You don’t wish this type of thing on anyone and when it happens so close to you and your work environment it does touch you.

“It leaves a massive gap, really. He’s got a big presence, he’s a leader and a winner. You can kind of feel it when he’s not there but he’s put some good things into place in the short time he’s been here and it’s now over to us to carry it on and put on a performance.

“It puts a lot of things into perspective. A lot of people around the country have suffered and we’re witnessing it here first-hand. We can just wish him well for a speedy recovery.”
