John Askey wants more fast starts from Shrewsbury Town

Boss John Askey praised his Shrewsbury players for delivering on a fast start and insists the key to progression is replicating that form over 90 minutes.

Town have struggled to get out of the traps at times this season but answered their critics with a goal barely 90 seconds in during the 3-1 win over Barnsley.

Askey’s men have also been guilty of, on too many occasions, putting a good performance in over one half of football.

“We emphasis starting quickly,” said the Town chief, who is aiming to break Salop’s barren run away from home in League One this season and secure their first win on the road at Oxford on Saturday.

“I thought against Sunderland, apart from the first three minutes, we did well (early on). It was important we started well but the emphasis was on doing it for 90 minutes and I thought for the majority of the game we did well.

“We came under a little bit of a storm against Barnsley when they scored but we held our nerve and kept going.

“Once we made a change with Josh Laurent going in there, to make us solid, we did well again.”

Askey was also appreciative of his side’s three goals, scored by Greg Docherty, Ollie Norburn and Luke Waterfall, against the Tykes.

It was the first time his side have scored three goals in the league this season. “They were all well-taken goals. We had opened them up, especially in the first half,” he added.

“They were good goals and hopefully the start of things to come.”
