John Askey plotting shift in Shrewsbury Town’s frontline
Shrewsbury boss John Askey has hinted he may be ready to shake up his attack in search of a first win.
Askey is without a win in six League One games – in which Town have scored just four times.
He is considering juggling his frontline to offer strikers Lee Angol and Aaron Amadi-Holloway a place in the team.
Askey has, so far, opted for a lone centre-forward in his 4-3-3 formation, but has suggested he is open to tweaking his team’s set-up.
“It’s a good option to have,” Askey said on playing Angol and Amadi-Holloway together.
“They’re both a handful. Lee’s quick and Aaron’s not slow at all.
“Once he (Amadi-Holloway) gets in his stride he can get away from people.
“It’s a nice option to have and something obviously we’ve got to look at going forward.
“We can’t keep doing the same thing. Sometimes you’ve got to change things up a little bit.”
Amadi-Holloway, 25, a summer signing from Oldham, has recovered from a groin injury sustained on the second weekend of the season.
He was instrumental from the bench in creating Town’s equaliser against Bristol Rovers.
Askey added: “As we all know, Aaron is a real handful. If we can get him on the park, doing what he can do, then there’s not many better at holding the ball up.
“He’s so strong. Again, it’s just a matter of getting him match fit.
“The main thing for forwards is to get goals and play well. Lee’s done that, we want everybody to start contributing.
“Midfield men need to start scoring. I think there’s competition for places throughout the team. It’s up to them to stake a claim whenever they get a chance.”
Town are without a midweek game until the beginning of October and Askey hopes to use the time on the training pitch wisely.
He said: “It does give us (time), but it does everybody else the same as well!
“But with us being a new side, it will obviously help us.”
