Shrewsbury Town face deadline day decision over Stefan Payne
Stefan Payne is set to seal a move to Bristol Rovers after agreeing personal terms with the club.
Rumours suggested the centre-forward was on his way for a medical at Town’s League One rivals Bristol Rovers.
The loss of Payne to The Gas, in a deal which the Shropshire Star understands to be an attractive offer, may force boss John Askey to shop for a replacement before this afternoon's 5pm deadline for permanent transfers.
Payne has not been in Askey's plans in his natural centre-forward position. Other Salop striker options are Fejiri Okenabirhie, Aaron Amadi-Holloway and Lenell John-Lewis.
Town have also been keen on Tranmere midfield star Oliver Norburn all summer and could yet test Micky Mellon's resolve by making another bid.
But Shrews are well stocked in midfield as Askey yesterday completed the loan signing of Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty.
The 21-year-old highly-rated Ibrox man was made available on loan by Gers boss Steven Gerrard and joins Montgomery Waters Meadow for the entire campaign.
