The 21-year-old midfielder, who joins on a season-long loan from Rangers, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get it over the line.

“I’ve spoken to guys that have played here before, one currently at Rangers - Connor Goldson. He told me that it’s a lovely place and a great club as well, and I just got a good feeling about coming down here.”

He added: “It’s been in the pipeline for a while, but it was about taking my time and finding the right club and I got a good feeling as I spoke to the guys here, Brian (Caldwell, chief executive) and the manager.”

Docherty noted the aspirations of Shrews after falling narrowly short of promotion last season and believes that he will fit well into their system.

“They’ve got really high expectations and it’s a nice family run club from what I gather, and a nice area, so I’m really looking forward to it," the midfielder continued.

“From speaking to the guys here it seems that they base themselves on a lot of hard work and that’s how I learnt my trade at my first club Hamilton.

“I love grinding out results and going home on a Saturday with a win knowing that you’ve put the work in.

“There’s nothing better for me and I’m really looking forward to that, and I think we could really push on, drive this team forward and see what happens again.”
