Salop have been tracking the 23-year-old this summer and John Askey has been keen to make the former QPR and Hartlepool battler part of his midfield ranks.

Laurent was a rare highlight in a difficult campaign for loan club Bury in League One last season. He made 22 appearances for the Shakers and impressed onlookers.

He has reportedly been given permission by Latics boss Paul Cook to speak to Town and finalise a move.

Town lost central midfield pair Abu Ogogo, who left for Coventry, and Ben Godfrey, who returned to parent club Norwich, this summer and Askey has been keen to bring in at least two recruits.

Doug Loft, who has been on trial for a couple of weeks, will get another chance to impress the boss in Saturday's home friendly with Brentford as he proves his fitness.
