As with clashes against Kidderminster and Bristol City, boss John Askey used the bulk of his squad against Sean Dyche’s Clarets.

Fejiri Okenabirhie, who came on at the break, made the difference in the second period after fine work down the flank was put into his own net by Burnley defender Charlie Taylor under pressure from Lenell John-Lewis.

It was a strong Burnley side fielded by the club who begin their Europa League campaign in nine days. Their starting XI included Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski, Aaron Lennon and Chris Wood.

Town again began with trialists in goal and midfield, thought to be Steve Arnold and Doug Loft, while Jon Nolan, Abo Eisa and Zak Jules were absent.

The visiting shot-stopper was busy in the first period, with one eye-catching save denying former West Brom striker Chris Wood in a one-on-one, before a double save to keep out Ali Koiki.

Shaun Whalley smashed an effort the wrong side of the post after a fine run.

But after a number of changes at the break it was Askey’s League One side who carved an opener and held on for the win to add to a positive draw at Bristol City and comprehensive win against Kidderminster Harriers.

John-Lewis flashed an effort wide minutes later after more creativity from Okenabirhie.
