Bernard McNally column: Time for Shrewsbury players to write their own history
I am delighted that these Shrewsbury players are making history for themselves in their push for the Championship.
It’s nice to go back as an ex-player and people remember you, it’s lovely. But they needed ‘new’ history. If they get to the Championship it starts a whole new ball game for themselves.
They will be the ones remembered. That’s the dream for them. I’m delighted for them. We just want to get over the final hurdle.
It was funny, I was at Crystal Palace v West Brom on Sunday and the Albion fans sang ‘Que Sera Sera, we’re going to Shrewsbury’ a number of times. They probably remember when West Brom went to Town and got relegated!
Paul Hurst, Chris Doig and this team have created history for themselves.
Hopefully this will see more fans coming to Shrewsbury. New fans. You want to be associated with success. What a way to try and bring in an extra 1,000 under-14s who have seen what it was like on TV at Charlton or at the stadium.
It was a great result away from home – more than I expected. To win home and away is some effort.
Everybody has got an opinion. I’ve spoke to people on site at work who aren’t Shrewsbury fans who said ‘They haven’t played very well recently’.
But it doesn’t really matter. Yes, you’d like to be winning games, but it’s all on the day.
I think the previous Wembley defeat and the record there will be forgotten after the Charlton displays.
It is fantastic to hear we are taking more fans this time and I hope it gets upwards of 20,000.
I remember being at Wembley with West Brom. There was about 12,000 Port Vale fans and it looked empty. Then we turned and saw 40,000-odd of our fans. It was just ‘wow’. It lifted us.
This is an occasion that everyone will remember and tell their kids.
The 180 minutes against Charlton has no doubt given fans encouragement. It’s going to be a great occasion.
All credit to Paul and Chris. What they said about resting players and momentum – they were 100 per cent right.
You have to trust the manager. He’s proven it.
Who would’ve thought it at the beginning of the season, when people were saying we’d be relegated, that we’d be going to Wembley twice and be third in the league. It’s sensational.
What a goal it was from Jon Nolan at The Valley. He’s had a tremendous season. He’s been a revelation.
At Wembley for the Checkatrade final, I sat next to a Lincoln reporter and he told me Jon didn’t have the best of times there. He said ‘This is just a different player’. It just shows what can happen.
Carlton Morris has got us to Wembley again and that’ll do his confidence the world of good.
This team can go confidently to Wembley and with no negative thoughts. A one-off. Totally focused. We’re going there to win promotion.
