Shrewsbury hope for new year safe standing start

Shrewsbury TOWN hope to begin installing safe standing at Montgomery Waters Meadow in the new year.

Around 500 rail seats will be installed in the Salop Leisure Stand after Town met their £65,000 crowd-funding target in October.

Town have held positive talks with the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and liaised with their supporters’ parliament – who first raised the idea – earlier this week to provide an update.

Shrewsbury’s chief executive Brian Caldwell said: “The next Safety Advisory Group meeting is in January, but we are hopeful that maybe in January or February we might be able to start installing it.

“They seem quite happy with what we’ve done.

“Ferco, who are obviously providing the safe standing seats, have put in a building application which shows that they’ve done a lot of testing on the concrete to make sure that any push on the actual barriers will be sufficient.”

Town are encouraging both season ticket holders and non-season ticket holders to fill in an online survey. The short questionnaire, which can be accessed via the club’s website, asks supporters whether they would consider taking a reduced price season ticket in the safe-standing area.

The club will become the first in England and Wales to operate safe standing. Scottish side Celtic have introduced safe standing successfully, alongside clubs on the continent.
