The all-action midfielder was central to his side's 1-0 victory, as he seldom gave Wigan's high-profile, talented players a moment's peace on the ball.

Ogogo was named first-team skipper by Hurst at the beginning of the season and has featured throughout Town's flying start, forging a highly impressive partnership with Jon Nolan and Ben Godfrey in midfield.

Hurst said: "I have to say I think our captain was exceptional today, he seemed to find another gear in terms of his energy, work-rate and how much chasing and harrying he did.

"I thought he was superb. He led by example and all of the lads followed.

"He drives forward. There was one crunching tackle early on that he won, things like that get the crowd going as well.

"It's got to be a mix. You can't have 11 Nolo's (Jon Nolan), you can't have 11 Abs, I think we have got a good mix of players now. If we can stay fit and healthy, having a bit of luck, and the players keep their feet on the ground, hopefully we'll get more good performances and days throughout the season."

Hurst added on Godfrey: "He's been in and around Norwich's first-team a lot and for a young lad I think he's got all the attributes to go on and have a really, really good career.

"He does a lot of the work that's not the eye-catching type that a Shaun Whalley or Alex Rodman gets noticed for."

Match-winner Payne was starting his first league game since joining Town on a permanent deal this summer. Fellow forward Carlton Morris was left out with a hamstring complaint.

But Hurst hopes to have Morris back in contention for tomorrow's visit of Southend United, who are winless in the league since the opening day.
