The 26-year-old striker, who had a 12-game loan spell at Town last season, has been signed on a two-year deal from Barnsley for an undisclosed fee.

He scored two goals during his temporary spell, after suffering a metatarsal injury on his debut.

Payne is looking to be a regular goal-getter for Paul Hurst's side and said: "It's good to be back.

"As a striker, you are judged on scoring.

"You can play good for 20 games and not score and no one will really look at you.

"If you play not so good for games and score 20 goals, everyone has a look.

"I want to score as many goals as I can."

Payne made a couple of substitute appearances for Barnsley in the Championship this term, but was keen to secure more regular football.

He added: "Coming on in the Championship is very good, but I want to playing week in, week out."

Hurst said: "Stefan is a great addition for us. I think there is more to come from him, the fans started to see that towards the back end of his time here.

"He played his part in helping us stay up and hopefully can carry on from there."
