Jon Nolan: Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst wants new recruit to be 'more selfish'
Paul Hurst wants Jon Nolan to be more selfish after Town's new midfielder gave another eye-catching display in the Northampton Town win.
Nolan, 25, a summer signing from Chesterfield, has fast become a Montgomery Waters Meadow favourite and grew into the League One opener, showing some deft touches and fine vision.
Hurst, who managed the Merseysider at Grimsby, was pleased with the attacking positions his No.20 took up but still insisted there is much more to come.
The midfielder was one of a number of Town players that caught the eye as the hosts sealed the points thanks to Lenell John-Lewis' winner.
Alex Rodman, Carlton Morris and Toto Nsiala also enjoyed strong afternoons.
"He didn't give it away too much no," Hurst said when questioned on Nolan.
"There was a couple of times he was in good positions and I want to see him drive at the opposition and be a bit more selfish.
"He's got great ability and he's a lot quicker than he looks, he glides, the way he gets to second balls first he has a great engine.
"But he's only part of a team today that I hope, and I want, a sign of what the team can give the fans, an honest hard-working group that can play as well."
Town outplayed the Cobblers, who looked disorganised and sloppy for most of the afternoon, and were were often first to any loose ball.
The boss added: "A message we talked about before the game was effort and how that's an absolute minimum, but we can play as well.
"If it was just a long ball game today I think we'd have come out second best, we tried to get it down and pass it which I thought we did well at times.
"What I want to promise is a team that'll give everything until the final whistle. It was a great example to take forward with us. "
