Louis Dodds aiming to repeat Shrewsbury Town goal feat

Louis Dodds is targetting double figures for goals again this term – but wants more of a challenge in the Shrewsbury top scorer ranks.

Town's No.10 finished his debut season with the club with 10 goals, ahead of loanee Ivan Toney, Junior Brown and loan strikers Freddie Ladapo and Tyler Roberts.

It was only the second time in the former Port Vale favourite's decade in the Football League that he reached double figures. The attacking midfielder has goals this pre-season against Ebbsfleet – in Portugal – and in the 2-1 win over Cardiff.

Boss Paul Hurst has added forwards Carlton Morris and Niall Ennis on loan, while he is hopeful others such as Alex Rodman, Arthur Gnahoua, Jon Nolan and Shaun Whalley can chip in.

And while Dodds, 30, hopes he can break the 10-goal landmark again, he has happy to be pushed in the top scorer rankings.

"I hope that there is more competition, yes," said Dodds. "If we start scoring more goals then we'll get more points.

"From the way pre-season is going, Rodders (Rodman) and Shaun (Whalley) have scored, I think Nolo's (Nolan) got an eye for goal too.

"I think there's a lot of different areas to get goals from and I think it'll be a big season for everyone.

"Double figures again would be nice. That'll be what I'm looking out to do. Hopefully I'll get a lot of games, goals and have a better season that last."

Hurst has assembled a much younger Shrewsbury squad this season, with Dodds, Mat Sadler and Alex Rodman the only squad members aged above 30.

Dodds, a lively squad member behind the scenes, likened the Town set-up to a school, where the older heads keep on top of things.

And he is more than happy to be on hand to lend advice.

He said: "I liken it in the changing rooms that you can't have a primary school without all of the teachers and we're all the teachers – otherwise it'll be carnage!

"We keep tabs on everyone and they're all doing well.

"It's invaluable experience. I hope the young lads come and ask for things, hopefully we can help them into seasoned professionals like we are.

"Likewise we can learn from them as in you've got to use your head when you're older so you can get them to do your running for you at times."
