Shrewsbury Town players may have missed their opportunity - Paul Hurst
Paul Hurst issued a word of warning to his Shrewsbury Town squad that some have missed chances to stake a claim in his first-team thoughts.
Town made it four wins against four Championship opponents at Montgomery Waters Meadow, beating Burton Albion 1-0 in a fiery encounter, but the boss was left less than impressed with elements of what he'd seen.
Sub Shaun Whalley netted a late winner from the spot against the 10-man Brewers, who had Marvin Sordell sent off for a horror first-half challenge.
Hurst said individuals may have passed up an opportunity to claim a blue and amber starting shirt come the League One launch against Northampton Town next week.
"I've just said to some of the lads there in the dressing room that quite a few lads have left themselves extremely vulnerable or not pushed themselves into the line-up," was Hurst's honest assessment.
"I've got some thinking to do this week. We've had Northampton watched and try and get an idea of how they line up.
"I've got certain people that will play in my mind but the others have perhaps missed an opportunity that was there for them."
While admitting the game 'bored him to tears', Hurst was also critical of some of his players' day-to-day demeanor, claiming they needed to improve their attitude in training.
"We've got some lads with the attitude to turn up every day, listening and learning, to get better and train properly," the boss added.
"That's what I want everyone to get to in truth.
"We've got some like that and we've got some that need to improve their attitude on a day-to-day basis and really push themselves.
"If they listen then they'll go on to have good careers and if not they'll get forgotten about."
