'Fresh' ideas at Shrewsbury Town excite Steve Biggins
Former Shrewsbury star Steve Biggins has lauded the club for giving the ‘fresh’ ideas of boss Paul Hurst a chance.
The Staffordshire-born sharp-shooter, fondly remembered for being a key part of the title-winning squad of 1978/79 in his first full season at Gay Meadow, predicts exciting times on the horizon for Town.
Biggins, 62, who now coaches football part-time at the Shrewsbury School, believes everything is in place for the club to progress under the ex-Grimsby chief. Biggins was signed by Richie Barker under the recommendation of Town legend Arthur Rowley.
“Paul has already done a great job, definitely,” said Biggins.
“I think they were in the mire a bit when he arrived and obviously it was touch and go towards the end but he did it and we’re still in the same division.
“Hopefully now he can make some good signings and push the club forward.”
The forward left Gay Meadow in 1982, moving to Oxford United for £8,000.
Biggins later spent time on loan with Wolves and Port Vale, as well as a season with Telford United during the twilight of his career, featuring regularly as the Bucks finished fifth in the Vauxhall Conference and lost out in an FA Trophy final replay.
Biggins is confident exciting times are ahead as Town are set to enter a new dawn under Hurst, who enters his first full season as Town boss. The club is also settling into their new Sundorne Castle training complex, as well as the re-branding sponsorship naming rights at the Meadow.
Biggins said: “It’s can be a bit of merry-go-round with managers.
“You’ve got to remember most managers have been sacked from somewhere else, so whichever one you employ you’re not sure of.
“But they did have to prise Paul away from Grimsby.
“It’s lovely to bring in somebody completely fresh and I hope he does really well. You hope there’s a bright period ahead.
“The club’s all set up to go further and further forward.
“I just hope we can get the players involved and have a good year next year.”
Town yesterday jetted off to Portugal for their warm-weather training camp, with new additions Arthur Gnahoua, Lenell John-Lewis, Jon Nolan, Zak Jules, Ebou Adams and Daniel James joining them.
