Cash boost for Shrewsbury Town's grassroots programme
Shrewsbury Town in the Community are have been awarded a £1,400 Grow the Game grant, something that has attracted praise from England manager Gareth Southgate.
The cash, which will provide a boost to grassroots football in Shropshire, has paved the way for Shrewsbury Town in the Community to create a deaf/hearing impaired session, adding to the list of disability programmes they already run.
Football Foundation ambassador Southgate said: “I am so pleased that Shrewsbury Town in the Community has secured this Grow the Game grant.
“The club has worked very hard with the Shropshire FA and the Football Foundation to get more people playing football so that they can enjoy the physical and mental benefits that come with playing regular sport.”
Grow the Game is a £2.5m programme funded by the FA and the Football Foundation. It awards grants to grassroots football clubs that wish to create new teams, especially amongst under-represented groups.
Shrewsbury Town in the Community’s head of community Jamie Edwards, said: “We’re really pleased to get the Grow the Game grant from the Football Foundation.
“We have been wanting to set up a deaf or hearing impaired team for some time now, so the money we have been given will go some way towards helping that and the work we do with our disability programmes around Shropshire.”
Meanwhile, pre-season training has begun for students signed up to the BTEC in Football and Education course due to start with Town in September.
More than 40 applicants turned up to the pre-season opener, with sessions now being held every Monday 10am-noon at SCAT.
The two-year course includes a minimum of six hours per week completing practical sessions, modules such as sports performance, anatomy and physiology and psychology, and an FA level one coaching qualification.
