Paul Hurst’s challenges Bryn Morris to find the net for Shrewsbury

TOWN boss Paul Hurst has challenged on-loan Bryn Morris to add goals to his game to become a more complete midfielder.

Former Middlesbrough youth prospect Morris caught the eye of Shrewsbury fans during his man-of-the-match display against Rochdale on Saturday.

The 20-year-old arrived at Greenhous Meadow on a contract until the end of the season and as he searches for a permanent deal in the Football League – Hurst has urged the midfielder to make more of his talent in the final third.

“If he can score and last 90 minutes then he’ll have an even better chance won’t he!” Hurst joked on Morris after he came off as a substitute a minute from the end.

“I watched Bryn before the Rochdale game. Chris (Doig) did some finishing with the forwards and Yatesy and Bryn joined in, both were very, very good.

“Moving forward in his career that is something Bryn’s got to look to do, because he’s got the technical ability to score goals from outside the box.

“Fingers crossed if he can chip in with one or two between now and the end of the season that’ll be fantastic for us.”

Morris’ spell at SY2 has already seen him play more football than in any of four previous loans – with Burton, Coventry, York and Friday’s visitors Walsall.

The Hartlepool-born player captained England at every youth level up to under-19s.

Hurst, who yesterday tied midfielder Abu Ogogo down at the Meadow for another term, doesn’t focus on one aspect of a midfielder’s game and likes a bit of everything.

“There’s lots of different types of midfield players,” he said. “I like them generally to be able to do a little bit of everything.

“Bryn’s defensive work is improving. He’s been used to being almost like an interceptor and passer rather than someone going and tackling.

“He’s done that well. He’s not frightened to put a tackle in and compete.

“But also to take the ball. He’s very good on the ball, he has a good range of passing that I still don’t think has come out 100 per cent. There was a ball he played against Millwall around the corner 20 yards at pace.

“I don’t know if everybody would’ve appreciated it but I certainly did – it was like ‘wow’ – that’s the level he’s come from. It’s trying to tie in everything from where he’s come from for Bryn.”
