Brian Caldwell: Don't change Football League structure
Shrewsbury Town chief executive Brian Caldwell has shared his thoughts on proposed changes to the Football League structure, adding: "it's not broken so why fix it?"
Earlier this year, the EFL announced plans to look at changing its structure from 2019.
The proposals included introducing eight new teams to the EFL to create four divisions of 20 teams, as opposed to the current structure of three divisions of 24 teams, and clubs had to give feedback last week.
"There's not been a great deal of detail if I'm honest," Caldwell told www.shrewsburytown.com
"They have sent an email to have a think about some various points, if they were extending the league where would we want the clubs coming from, where would be not want the clubs coming from.
"Me personally, I don't think it's vastly wrong what we're doing now.
"Having only been here for six months that is certainly my impression,it's not broken so why fix it?"
Caldwell believes it will be difficult for all of the clubs to agree as the divisions are currently very competitive.
"Just look at the clubs in League One," he added.
"Look at us and the attendances we get and we're probably halfway in the league, but there's some big clubs in League One as we know ourselves and it's very competitive.
"Even in League Two you've got clubs like Portsmouth too, so it's a very competitive league.
"I don't think the EFL will ever get agreement on the way forward to try and change the format, because it's very difficult to get everybody to agree to anything I would suggest, because everyone's got different agendas."
