The 20-year-old striker will feature for Salop until just after Christmas, as he becomes the 10th new face through the doors this summer.

Boss Micky Mellon has added to his forward line after the cancellation of Tyrone Barnett's contract last week left him with just two fit senior strikers.

On sealing the deal for Toney, Mellon said: "Ivan is a player we've known since his Northampton days.

"He's got a big move as a young player to Newcastle, so they think very highly of him. He's been out on loan last year to the play-off winners Barnsley, where he featured very heavily in their campaign, also winning the Cup.

"So he's got some very good experience and lots of qualities that we want to bring to the group that we don't already have.

"He'll make us a better group.

"He's a centre-forward, he's six foot two, pacy, he's a very good player, a very good all-round striker who has been brought here because the qualities he has enhance what we already have.

"He's came here with a lot of desire to do really well and get back into the Newcastle first team.

"We're delighted to be getting that quality of player allowed to come to us from these big clubs because we're building a reputation now that if we take these guys we work very hard to improve them."

The Northampton-born hitman, who stands at 6 ft 2 in, played for his hometown club before earning a move to then Premier League side Newcastle United in 2015.

After making his senior debut from the bench - Toney has featured twice as a Newcastle senior - he enjoyed two loan spells at Barnsley.

A second loan stint saw the striker impress for The Tykes, including two trips to Wembley where they sealed success in the League One play-offs and the Football League Trophy.

"He's got great technical ability, he certainly stands out, he's got the tricks and the turns and he knows his way to goal," Mellon added.

"He's got a turn of pace, so he's got all of the attributes that a player Newcastle bought from a lower league team would have. There was a lot of interest in him and the Shrewsbury fans with good memories will remember him playing against us for Northampton, we're pleased to get him in and we worked hard to get him in.

"Well we hope so (be a match-winner), we brought him for the qualities he has because we wanted something different to what we already have, he's a lad with a lot of talent."
