The 30-year-old frontman is a free agent after his six-month deal at Hibernian ended this summer. Town boss Micky Mellon wanted to sign Dagnall last summer.

The Liverpool-born forward opted instead to sign a lucrative short-term deal with Indian Super League side Kerela Blasters. before moving to Hibs in January.

Dagnall is well known to the Town chief, having started his career at Tranmere during Mellon's second spell as a player at Prenton Park.

He then played under Mellon during the Scot's time as assistant manager to David Flitcroft at Barnsley.

Dagnall is looking to resurrect his career in England after a frustrating time north of the border.

He did win a Scottish Cup winner's medal, though, as an unused substitute after Hibs beat Rangers 3-2 in the final.

After notching five goals in nine games during his spell in India, Dagnall failed to score in 15 appearances in all competitions for Hibs, with all but five of those games as a substitute.

He's scored 98 goals in 396 league games for Tranmere, Rochdale, Scunthorpe, Barnsley, Bradford, Coventry and Leyton Orient.

Dagnall fits the 'League One game-ready' profile identified by Mellon at the end of the season.

Town have strengthened their attack this summer with the acquisition of Louis Dodds and AJ Leitch-Smith, both from Port Vale.

They are still light in numbers up front, after losing 12-goal top scorer Sullay Kaikai and releasing Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Scott Vernon.

There are also doubts over the futures of James Collins and Tyrone Barnett. If Dagnall signs, he would become the eighth signing made by Mellon this summer.

It would follow Olly Lancashire, Ryan McGivern, Gary Deegan, Antoni Sarcevic, Jim O'Brien, Dodds and Leitch-Smith.

Dagnall's best spell was at Rochdale, where he was signed as a replacement for former Shrewsbury striker Grant Holt.

At Dale, he netted 57 goals in 161 League games, including 20 to help them to promotion from League Two in 2009-10, which earned him a move to Scunthorpe, who were then in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Town will visit Wolves in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday July 9.

Molineux boss Kenny Jackett plans to give his first-team players 45 minutes each in what will be their first arranged game of pre-season, ahead of the friendly at Crewe (July 15).
