Shrewsbury Town back league proposals

Shrewsbury Town have backed Football League proposals in principle which could see the number of divisions increase from three to four.

The Football League is proposing to raise the number of divisions from three to four with 20 teams in each league in their discussion document 'Whole Game Solution.'

The matter will be discussed at the Football League's summer conference early next month.

Under the proposal, the League would become a four-division competition below the Premier League, including a new League Three, with 100 clubs competing across the professional game.

The board of the league believe clubs should be no worse off financially, or maybe better off.

Town chief executive Brian Caldwell said: "We must always consider change providing it's in the best interests of the club and our fans.

"The main reason for the proposal would appear to be to reduce midweek matches which I'm sure would be beneficial to many of our fans.

"No decision will be made by clubs on the way ahead until next year. We look forward to hearing the proposals in full and will then be in a better position to give an opinion."

If implemented, the number of midweek matches reduce from next season's nine in the Championship, seven in League One and six in League Two.

It's compared to one in the Championship, League Two and the new League Three and none in League One in 2019-20.

Among the League's objectives are to maximise the number of weekend and Bank Holiday fixtures, and remove fixture congestion.

The league believes there are several benefits, including making each fixture more important, reduced travel costs and midweek travel for fans vastly reduced.

There's potential to reduce squad size, more recovery time and match preparation, increased season ticket sales due to fewer midweek games.

There's statistically a greater chance of promotion (and relegation), plus at least six new clubs to play each season.

The league also insists promotion and relegation to and from the Premier League must remain at three places and there would be no relegation from the Football League in 2018-19.
