Knight-Percival on return to Peterborough: Points more important than sentiment

The Shrewsbury Town defender, who made 56 appearances for Posh from 2012-14, got his big break in professional football when Peterborough snapped him up from Wrexham and he was launched from the Conference to the Championship.

In a rollercoaster two years Knight-Percival suffered relegation, played in two divisions and a promotion play-off and was a Wembley winner when he won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Now the 28-year-old defender goes back to London Road aiming to show them how much he has improved.

"I'm very grateful for the chance they gave me to play at that level," said Knight-Percival.

"It was brilliant opportunity to play for them and I enjoyed it.

"It was my first experience of playing professional football outside of non-league so it was a big learning curve for me.

"I improved a lot and learned so much. When I moved to Peterborough I became more rounded and I'm thankful for them for what they did with me, particularly all the coaches - they were very good.

"Darren Ferguson (then Posh manager) helped me a lot and also Gary Breen, who was the defensive coach who came in my second year.

"He did a lot of work with the defenders specifically, and as a former Ireland centre-back, he had so much experience to pass on and I learned a lot from him.

Knight-Percival is one of two Town players facing their old club with Tyrone Barnett, who was Posh's first £1m player when he cost £1.2m from Crawley.

"We've had a little chat about it but nothing too extensive - just 'looking forward to going back?' that sort of thing," he said.

"It would be nice to win there and that's what we want to do.

"We're going to try to do a job and win - it doesn't really bother me what they think - it's more about us getting the points and hopefully making it enjoyable for the fans.

Asked what reception he expects, he said: "Minimal probably! I might get a little bit of booing."
