Former fans' favourite Kevin McIntyre will aim to wreck Shrewsbury Town's promotion party this weekend – but hopes his former team seal their rise to League One in the subsequent fortnight.

The 34-year-old will line up against Town for Accrington Stanley on Saturday, where a Shrewsbury success in Lancashire could spark the biggest celebrations in the club's recent history.

Victory for Graham Turner's side coupled with defeat for either Torquay United or Crawley Town will guarantee a top-three finish with two games to spare.

But, while tough-tackling McIntyre reveals he still has a soft spot for his former club, he is determined to ensure his old team-mates are not celebrating at the Crown Ground.

"I had some great years at Shrewsbury and I hope they get promoted because the manager, staff, players and fans all deserve it," said McIntyre.

"The whole place is all set up for League One and even Championship football.

"I had nearly four years there and they were great times. But I'm an Accrington Stanley player now.

"I'm really enjoying it here and will be desperate to try to get three points on Saturday and put the Shrewsbury celebrations off for another week."

Meanwhile, left-back Joe Jacobson believes Town have displayed their mettle by producing their best run of form during the run-in.

"There has been no sign of nerves and I think that has been shown by us playing as we have done over the last few weeks," he said.

"But we know there is still a lot of hard work to do before we get promoted and that starts again on Saturday."

Jacobson will be making his first return to Accrington, where he spent 18 months prior to signing for Shrewsbury last summer and also had a loan spell in 2006-7.

And the Welshman admits it is ironic he could be part of a squad sealing promotion at his former stomping ground.

"It's my first trip back and it's strange the way it has worked out," added the 25-year-old. "It will be good to see a lot of old faces."

Town are on course to sell out their allocation of 2,015 after the game was made all-ticket yesterday.
