AFC Telford boss Rob Edwards: 50 points should do the trick

Boss Rob Edwards believes reaching 50 points would probably be enough to seal survival for AFC Telford United.

The Bucks are third bottom in National League North, on 41 points, with six games left.

They lost to 2-1 to Chorley at the New Bucks Head on Saturday.

When asked if he has a points total in mind, Edwards said: "It's just one more than three other teams, it's that simple.

"All our focus now is just on Thursday (against Leamington at home).

"There's no target in mind at the moment as I think that is dangerous, to be honest.

"If it starts with a five then I think you're okay. Getting there will be a challenge, but we're capable of doing that.

"I think that normally, looking back historically, guarantees you (staying up).

"I'm not sure what it's going to be this year. All we can do is concentrate on ourselves and win football matches."

Telford are adrift on goal difference. It is up in the air as to who will join North Ferriby United in being relegated.

A lot of teams can class themselves as still in the mix – even 11th-placed Boston United who are on 49 points.

Edwards has urged his charges to continue working hard and not be downhearted by the Chorley defeat.

"That's a big part of it – managing the occasions," he said.

"You've go to try to get training right, be organised.

"The biggest thing is the effort, hard work and commitment.

"Against a very organised Chorley team, the lads huffed and puffed but it was tough to break them down.

"Going forward, we have to do try to do the same as we're not going to come up against that kind of defence every week.

"We've got to keep believing, keep working hard – that's everyone. We need everyone with us and we'll be OK."

Edwards took time to praise the club's volunteers for getting Saturday's game on.

Several forked the boggy pitch through the morning to the afternoon.

"Outstanding. They were here from really early on in the morning, when it started to rain," added Edwards.

"The pitch was in a bad way with a lot of standing water and that help, we really appreciate it."
