Paul McCone: Forget former glories
AFC Telford United warhorse Paul McCone has warned his team-mates they can't hide behind a shiny stadium to escape the drop.
The beleaguered Bucks prepare for tomorrow's trip to second-placed AFC Fylde desperate to drag themselves off the foot of National North after a dismal start which has left them with five points from 10 games.
Recent signing McCone has been one of the rare highlights of a desperate campaign so far. Boss Rob Smith has told Telford, who are already three points adrift at the foot of the table, to escape the drop zone by Christmas.
But former Wolves academy defender McCone believes players can't live on past glories to drag the club out of their current mess.
"Telford are too big of a team to be where we are in the league," said the ex-Hednesford stopper.
"But you can't always hide behind a nice stadium and where they've come from, because at the moment we're bottom of the league.
"We need to start getting up the table before we can get too far ahead of ourselves, but this club is definitely too big to be in the position it's in."
McCone is convinced Smith is the man to lead Telford to safety.
"I think he's the right man to get us out of this position," he said. "He knows the place like the back of his hand and had some good times here."
Telford are without the suspended Lucas Dawson and injured Dave Hibbert, Jack Rea, Mike Grogan and Izak Reid.
