The left-back is confident Dean Smith’s team can kick on again and improve on this year’s 11th-placed finish.

Villa enjoyed an impressive campaign after only staying up on the final day a year ago but Targett is eager to keep pushing up the table.

He said: “This season was a massive step up from last season. We’ve built on it, made a few great signings who have taken the league by storm.

“I am sure we will kick on again next season and really push on for those European places.”

The 25-year-old was the only outfield player to start all 38 of Villa’s Premier League matches, his fine individual campaign recognised when he was voted players’ player of the season.

Target continued: “It is nice to win that award, with players you train with day-in, day-out, they see the hard work you put in. To win the award, I can’t thank them enough. I can name five or six off the top of my head who all deserve it. It has been a fantastic season personally and I can’t wait for next.

“I have huge respect for all the players in the dressing room and I can’t thank them enough for voting for me.”
