In what has been a positive season so far, Smith’s men have amassed 35 points from 21 top-flight outings.

That is the same amount as they managed throughout the entire 2019/20 campaign – with the total being just enough to keep them in the Premier League.

But while the team has made huge strides forward, they have won five, lost five and drawn one of their last 11 games.

And Smith believes that shows being more consistent is now the big challenge the for his players.

“We have matched our points tally from last season after 21 games which just shows the level of improvement the team has made,” the boss said.

“The players know my desire is to be more consistent.

“I felt the last couple of games, from West Ham to Arsenal, there was a big difference in our performance levels.

“We need to be more consistent if we are going to be challenging in the top eight or top 10 of this league.”
