Mike Beckett released a statement to clubs in the SPS Whitchurch League following its pre-season executive meeting at the Archibald Worthington Club.

“What I said at the executive meeting is not quite correct in regarding a player allowed to play twice,” admitted Beckett, who is county president this year.

“I stated that the lowest team from a club having more than one team may play a player twice, but the actual rule that was passed at the AGM was that the lowest team from a club may play a player twice.

“Consequently the correct interpretation of the rule is that the lowest team from a club may play a player twice, even if that club only has one team – and I apologise for any misunderstanding.”

Club delegates were inspired by a talk on coaching by county development officer Pauline Wilson, who is anxious to boost the numbers of active coaches outside the Mid Shropshire area.

The Whitchurch League’s competition calendar opens on Saturday with the Norman Ford Classic at Prees from 11am.

It is followed by the Judith Purcell mixed doubles on May 26, the under-18 Merit on June 8, under-12 Merit on June 29 and the draw for partners St Alkmunds doubles is taking place on July 6.
