The Prince of Wales BC No.1 teamed up with Castlefields ace Paul Williams to win the Wem League Doubles on Sunday at Greenfields.

Edwards, runner-up in both County Handicap and Tanners Shropshire League Merit this year, and Williams beat Hanwood's Dave Burton and Russell Wellings 21-19 in the final on a day of confusion.

League secretary Liz Taylor explained: "We moved the start time back to 12 noon but still had horrendous problems due to the late start of the half marathon.

"Thank you those who did persevere and also to Greenfields as the greens and facilities were excellent.

"We had 12 couples and eventually started at 12.30 – and I don't know how they did it in the heat, but as the afternoon got hotter and hotter the bowling was tremendous."

Edwards and Williams soon opened up 6-2, 12-7 and 18-9 leads in the final and it looked all over.

But Burton and Wellings found the resolve to draw level at 19 across, only to not score again.

In the semi-finals Edwards and Williams saw off Baschurch big-guns Rich Lawson and Mark Shore 21-17 while Burton and Russell were romping past Nathan Thomas and Callum Parsons 21-5.

A consolation KO for early losers was held on the No.2 green and five entered, the winners with a full house four at the end being Geoff Davies and Kelvin Holder against Nat Lee and Nessy Medlicott 21-16.

Main KO quarter finals results: Thomas and Parsons 21 Nat Lee and Nessy Medlicott 18; Chris Kelly and Kevin Jones 12 Edwards and Williams 21; Lawson and Shore 21 Ted and Jo Wellard 12; Burton and Wellings 21 Hayden Lewis and Lesley Medlicott 18.
