Shropshire skipper hopes to shock cup holders
Shropshire county bowls captain Derek Wright is confident his men can stage an upset when they travel to Crossfield Cup holders Warwickshire and Worcester.
Wright and home skipper Colin Beaman have a tough challenge ahead after Shropshire were pitted in a County Championship group that, as well as tomorrow's opponents, includes Greater Manchester and North Midlands.
"Warwickshire and Worcestershire were the national champions last year so we're up against the best side in the country," said Wright.
"They've got the Midlands amateur champion, Ryan Prosser, in their ranks, so it's going to be a very difficult game for us, particularly as they've chosen their 'banker green' at The George at Warley for their home leg.
"But we beat them in 2009 when we were national champions."
While Wright takes his 12 to Birmingham, Beaman plans to draft in Gary Neal, Alex James and Will Tarrell for their county debuts at Castlefields, the first time the Shrewsbury club has been used for the home leg.
"We're hopeful we can make the most of the home leg at Castlefields and earn a big enough lead," added the county captain. "We're up against a talented side, but we've been very competitive ourselves for a number of years."
