Bridgnorth golfers take on the Open course at Royal Portrush
Roy Hamilton and Kelvin Weeks have helped put Bridgnorth Golf Club on the map after competing in the R&A Nine-Hole Club Challenge which took place at the venue of this year's Open, Royal Portrush.
The Club Challenge has been running for a few years and from April each year a club can run off a report from the WHS platform to determine the top two players who returned the best nine hole scores between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025.
This year, one of the top three leading pairs from across England were Hamilton and Weeks, who qualified for an all-expenses-paid trip to Northern Ireland, to represent England Golf's R&A
Ten countries were represented with a total of 39 pairs competing for silverware, which was won by Sharon Conway and Michael Wynne, from Rathcore Golf Club, with a net aggregate Stableford score of 37 points.
Hamilton said: “We had a fantastic few days over in Northern Ireland. As expected the course was very difficult and the greens were like glass. The top score was 37 points and we came in with 24. This was a fantastic event and a true once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Weeks added: "Coming up the 18th with the huge stand in the background was just a wonderful experience and I can't imagine how it would feel full of people. Sadly the nine holes was over too soon, but won't be forgotten.
“We were treated to a fabulous three-course meal at Portrush Golf Club, the whole evening was very special. We were made to feel like winners for getting there. I can't thank The R&A and the organisers enough for letting us play The Royal Portrush Dunluce Links."
England call-up
Shropshire golf stars Isla McDonald-O'Brien and Lauren Crump have earned another England call.
The duo will feature for England in the upcoming Women’s and Men’s Home Internationals and Girls’ and Boys’ Home Internationals.
The competition takes place at Cork Golf Club, Ireland from August 5-7, with England having won all four of the combined events since its inception in 2021.
Shrewsbury ace McDonald-O'Brien, 18, has enjoyed a successful year in America with top-five finishes at the Notre Dame Clover Cup and NCAA Gold Canyon Regional, and a third-placed finish at PING ASU Invitational.
She also helped GB&I win the Vagliano Trophy against Europe and represented England at European Ladies’ Team Championship.
Crump (Hill Valley) will go into the competition in confident mood having recently won the English Girls' Stroke Play Championships for a second successive year.
That success followed victory in the Comboy Scratch at Delamere Forest and second-placed finishes in the Women's Open Pre-Qualifier at Delamere Forest and the Fairhaven Trophy, plus top five finishes in the R&A Girls' U16 Amateur Championship and 2025 Scottish Girls' U18 Championship.
The 16-year-old also excelled for England Under-16s, winning all four of her matches in an international clash with Spain, and represented England at the Toyota Junior World Cup and at European Girls’ Team Championship.
