Goodfield, who used to play for Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club, was included in head coach Bobby Crutchley’s squad and has been preparing Down Under for the event.

England have been drawn in Pool A of the tournament alongside Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Wales. Their campaign gets under way against Malaysia at 9.30am tomorrow (Friday) morning.

“I’ve always wanted to play in a Commonwealth Games,” said the 24-year-old, who plays for London side Surbiton and will be cheered on in Australia by his dad, mum and nan. “I’m absolutely over the moon to get selected.

“Especially with it being in Australia as well. That just heightens it a lot more.”

“We want to be there or thereabouts competing with medals at the end. I don’t think we’ve ever made the final.

“We want to be in and around the medal matches, any colours, but we hope to be at the end of the tournament.”
