Warwick France, of New Works in Telford, and Shrewsbury's Allan Williams claimed the pairs title at the English Championships in Bedfordshire at the weekend.

They defeated Essex-based father and son pairing Dominic and Nick Reed in a thrilling final, with Williams clinching success with the final bowl of the match after the Shropshire duo entered the last end trailing 8-6.

It was France's fifth English title following earlier successes in 1996 and 1998, and the pair now go forward to represent England next season in the British Isles Championships in Dumfries in November.

There was more Shropshire glory over finals weekend with Nick Tideswell, Darran Beardmore and Alan Jones claiming the triples title.

The trio are all based in Stoke but moved over to represent Shropshire following the demise of the Staffordshire team.
