The World Cup future of some of the greatest footballers lies in the hands of a Welshpool councillor.

Phil Pritchard, a county and town councillor for Welshpool, and president of the Football Association of Wales, is a member of the FIFA disciplinary committee in South Africa.

So far, Mr Pritchard has dealt with several high profile cases — including the sending off of Australia and Everton's Tim Cahill for a foul in the country's opening 4-0 defeat to Germany.

The panel cut his suspension from two games to one following a hearing and he went on to score in the final group game against Serbia.

Mr Pritchard said he could not comment on individual cases but was enjoying his time in the country.

"There are 12 of us on the panel and we have been looking at the incidents which have happened during the matches. It is a great honour to be playing a part behind the scenes for FIFA."
