"There was more chance of it being none than three, so I'll take my point. I'm absolutely thrilled with it."

Louis Saha hit the bar for Everton while Leon Osman failed to make the most of three good early chances.

Two of them were dealt with by impressive Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who was in the right place to frustrate the visitors throughout the encounter.

McCarthy said: "He was terrific, he has been since getting into the side.

"But they have all had to work hard. It has been workmanlike, full of desire, effort and honesty.

"While we have that we will always have a chance. We have our moments of quality and we will certainly battle it out with everybody."
