But McCarthy is confident the situation can be turned around - starting at home tomorrow.
He said: "I know what we have to do, beat Bolton. You'd be amazed by how a victory against Bolton would lift this place, the fans, the club, everybody.
"My message is 'Let's be positive about the game'. We can't do anything about Birmingham, or anything else.
"Despite a really lacklustre performance in the first half against Birmingham, we ended up with three headed chances.
"We were 1-0 up at Everton, they got one chance and scored. That's what we have to do. We have to convert our chances.
"I thought up until the Arsenal and Chelsea games we always looked a threat and I thought we'd score goals.
"I take those two games out of it, and Birmingham when we were poor. It's about us turning it around. There's no doubt they're good players."
McCarthy is aware victory over Bolton will do wonders for confidence.
He said: "I'm not suggesting for one minute that they're lacking confidence, but it's amazing how it floods back, or it grows.
"If we beat Bolton there will be a different feel about the place Monday morning."
