McCarthy admitted his side's passing wasn't as 'crisp' as it should be and conceded Blues had the better of the first-half, when Wayne Hennessey twice saved from Kevin Phillips.
"In the first half I thought it was fairly even - there were a lot of chances and perhaps they shaded it," he said. "I thought we started well but our passing wasn't as crisp as the quality I would have liked.
"Their goal was a poor one for us to concede at the start of the second half and they had the better of it for 10 minutes or so.
"But we recovered quite quickly from that, and we started playing and ended up the stronger side and we were the more likely winners.
"I'm not saying we would have deserved the win, but we would have taken it - just like I'm sure Alex (McLeish) would.
"Overall I thought it was a fair point for both sides."
Looking at the bigger picture, McCarthy was delighted by the return after beating Sheffield United away and drawing with Blues.
"I have a very pragmatic approach to life, like I do football and would I have taken four points from the last two games? The answer is yes," he said.
