Martin in the swim

Market Drayton's Ian Martin was a six hit in the first rounds of the Shropshire Star-backed County ASA Swimming Championships.

Swimmers from all over Shropshire headed to Market Drayton for the opening weekend, but it was host club's Ian Martin who caught the eye.

Martin won six of the events in the boys 16-year- old age group, also achieving a Midland Qualifying time.

Fourteen-year-old Fern Davies (Ludlow) and 15-year-old Alex Hooper (Shrewsbury) continued their big tussle for honours.

Alex took first place in the grand final of the 100m backstroke in a time of 1min 4.05secs, but Fern reversed the places to win the 100m butterfly final in 1-05.74 secs, both girls achieving National and Midland qualifying times.

In the 16 year age group, Hannah Shepherd (Shrewsbury) won all five of her events and also achieved a Midland qualifying time.

In all 19 swimmers achieved Midland Qualifying times and two achieved National Qualifying times.
