'MPs crossing the house floor to join another party is nothing new' - Your Letters: September 17
PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVE: A family at a holiday chalet which was on the site of what is now the Severn Valley Country Park, Alveley. Many enjoyed weekends and holiday in the wooden cabins, often travelling from the Black Country for a break in the countryside alongside the river in Shropshire.

MPs DEFECTING IS NOTHING NEW
MPs crossing the house floor to join another party is nothing new. This triggers the inevitable calls from the defective party for the the individual to re-stand in a by-election.
This never happens as the individuals concerned lack basic honesty and principles and are content to keep taking the UK’s tax payer funded wages. At present the rules that govern for MPs cannot force them to do so either. The 2010 government looked at this and said "That such a change would be a major constitutional reform of the role of MPs and their independence" and therefore they had no plans to do so.
Why is their job role and description so precious that they are exempt from having it amended like everyone else in the country?
Surely a simple paragraph with words to affect in their contract of employment would resolve this on going farce. If they resign from the party they where elected for to join another. It would be classed as a breach of their electorate voting intentions which in-turn is considered a serious violation of trust resulting in self dismissal.
