We should preserve Lord Hill's column
Over the past few years, the elements have not been kind to Lord Hill.
Five years ago, his column outside Shrewsbury's Shire Hall was subjected to repair work costing £106,551. And recent high winds and freezing temperatures mean that further repairs are needed at a cost of £10,000.
The column, built between 1814 and 1816, commemorates Rowland Hill, who fought alongside the Duke of Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo. A brave and distinguished warrior, he was also universally liked and respected by the men under his command, who affectionately called him 'Daddy Hill'.
We know budgets are tight, but if it costs £10,000 to preserve this monument for future generations it is money well spent.
The column is one of Shropshire's most familiar landmarks, and a fitting tribute to one of its favourite sons.
