Motorists in Shrewsbury are being warned of more road closures as part of a programme of improvement works across the town.

Meole Brace roundabout is currently undergoing major reconstruction works as part of the £12 million Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP).

Today, transport bosses have reminded drivers that the Roman Road approach to the roundabout will be closed for a week from Tuesday to allow the next stage of work to go ahead.

The closure will be in force 24 hours a day to allow for the full reconstruction of a section of road leading onto the roundabout and for further improvements to the signalised junction between Roman Road and Hereford Road.

During the work, Shropshire Council say access will be maintained for pedestrians, dismounted cyclists and vehicles accessing local businesses only.

A statement on the Shropshire Council website said: "Whilst these works are planned to take one week, every effort will be made to complete the works and reopen the roads in time for Shrewsbury Town FC’s home fixture against Southend on Saturday, April 22 and before schools return from the Easter break on Monday, April 24.

"The work at Meole Brace roundabout is being carried out as part of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP) and will create a new link road and shared-use pathway through the roundabout, and upgrade the existing traffic signals.

"Once the work is completed the roundabout will have the extra capacity needed to accommodate future traffic levels and reduce congestion, and will have improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities.

"Under the SITP, work will be carried out throughout 2017 to improve five major junctions including Meole Brace roundabout, Sutton Park roundabout, Reabrook roundabout, English Bridge gyratory, and Longden Coleham – including improved crossings at many of these junctions.

"The work at Meole Brace roundabout is due to be completed in spring 2017."

A number of diversions will be put in place during the works.

Shropshire Council say the Roman Road approach closure will be via Roman Road, Radbrook Road/Hanwood Road, Edgebold roundabout, Bayston Hill roundabout and Hereford Road.

The Hereford Road closure will be via Hereford Road/Belle Vue Road, Longden Coleham/Longden Road and will continue on the above diversion.

Also as part of the SITP, Sutton Park roundabout will be closed between 8pm and 6am from Tuesday to May 5 to allow resurfacing work to take place.
