Ex-school scheme going to Shrewsbury planners
Plans to transform part of an historic former school building into luxury flats have been recommended for approval for a second time.
Developers Shropshire Homes want to create six apartments at 33 Kennedy Road in Shrewsbury, which they bought for £1.2 million earlier this year.
And officials at the firm have put forward revised plans for the site – the former junior school of Shrewsbury High School – which will be discussed by councillors on Thursday.
The plans propose converting the main school building into apartments and building two further properties within the grounds of the site.
To enable the development, classroom extensions on the school building would be demolished, with the main three-storey building being retained and converted.
The plans initially went before Shropshire councillors in April, but members of the central planning committee asked for changes to be made to the proposals to retain the existing coach house.
Shrewsbury Civic Society, which objected to the development on the grounds it would have a "detrimental impact" upon the area.
The report says: "The scale, density, pattern and design of the proposed conversion and new dwellings are considered to be appropriate and the proposal protects, restores, conserves and enhances the natural and built environment without adversely affecting the amenities and neighbouring residents and the locality."
A decision will be made on the plans at a meeting at Shirehall at 2pm on Thursday.
Plans for a housing development in the Meole area of Shrewsbury have been recommended for approval, despite fears that increased traffic could put schoolchildren at risk. Dozens of residents objected to plans for seven homes to the rear of Meole Crescent.
