Members of Telford & Wrekin Council's plans board gave outline planning permission for up to 87 homes on and at the former Woodlands Primary School, Wensley Green, Telford.

The development is part of the council's Building Schools for the Future scheme, which has seen Woodlands Primary School relocate to new facilities on the site of Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley.

At the plans board meeting last night, Councillor Shirley Reynolds said: "This is income-generating.

"I think this is an excellent scheme and we've got to support this and be mindful that it's part of a much bigger scheme that is benefiting the whole area."

As part of the development, traffic issues in the area will be addressed and pedestrian routes will be created to link Woodside Local Centre with the new Woodlands Primary School via a toucan crossing across Ironbridge Road.

The scheme also includes work to improve the leisure facilities off Park Lane, and the creation of a new multi-use games area and skate park.

Councillors also heard that funding generated by the development of the site will help pay for more sports pitches to provided at the nearby William Reynolds School and a new community park which will be sited off Park Lane.

As part of the planning permission, developers will be asked to make a contribution of £150,000 toward the play equipment or facilities near to the site, £50,000 toward highway improvements and £63,000 toward the provision of new parking facilities off Mound Way, next to Woodlands Primary School's new site.

During the meeting councillors also approved plans for these parking facilities, which will see 18 spaces created for parents to pick up and drop off their children.

There are currently no parking facilities at the site.
