Moving to Shrewsbury

As part of our regular property features on life in different areas of Shropshire, we look at moving to Shrewsbury, including information on schools, transport and house prices.

The second largest town in Shropshire, after Telford, Shrewsbury is perched around the banks of the River Severn and boasts a colourful history.

Many of the town's historic buildings have been very well preserved and Shrewsbury now boasts over 660 Listed buildings - including some striking examples of Tudor architecturem as well as Shrewsbury Castle.

It is home to some 65,000 people and the county's only Football League club - Shrewsbury Town, who currently ply their trade in League Two.

Transport:

Shrewsbury is well-served by its road network, being surrounded by the A5 which offers easy access to the rest of Shropshire and the M54 to the east, which opens up Telford and the West Midlands.

The five railway lines at Shrewsbury railway station make it possible to get around without a car too. Regular services run to Wolverhampton, Telford, Birmingham, Manchester and more.

Arriva Midlands run the town's bus services, offering a link to the rest of Shropshire.

What the people say:

Mark Fielden tell us on our Facebook page that Shrewsbury is a "great place to live, lovely town, great history, fantastic quarry park and river walks and loads of pubs and bars!"

He adds that the worst aspect of Shrewsbury life is the shopping, with too many empty units.

Sarah Sinead Dodd agreed and also pointed out the lack of crime, which enables her to walk around the town without feeling intimidated - even at night.

However, she added that "parking in the town is a nightmare - it's too expensive and poorly signed."

Schools:

The majority of the town's pupils attend one of the eight comprehensive schools, including The Wakeman, whose future is under threat despite a recent 'Good' Ofsted inspection, and The Priory, which was most recently rated as 'Outstanding.'

There is also Shrewsbury School - a public school whose alumni include Michael Palin and Nick Hancock.

Property prices:

The average price paid for a property in Shrewsbury over the past three years was £199,352. The average value has decreased by 6.9 per cent in that time - an average monetary loss of £14,575.
