Poll: Is Boris Johnson a good choice as Foreign Secretary?
Naming Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary is the "most remarkable" appointment to high office since the Roman emperor "Caligula appointed his horse as a senator", a Labour MP has said.
Caligula is famed for having reportedly planned to make his horse a consul.
Tom Brake, the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington, also poked fun at Mr Johnson's appointment.
He asked ministers to set out how UK manufacturers can help create "transcontinental zip wires to enable our new Foreign Secretary to travel cheaply and with low environmental impact and in the style he is accustomed to around the world".
Mr Johnson famously got stuck on a zip wire in 2012 while waving two Union flags.
The SNP's shadow Commons leader Pete Wishart added: "You could almost have heard the guffaws of laughter from parliaments and ambassadors last night as the news got around that Boris was in charge of the UK's foreign policy, and indeed MI6 he's also in charge of too."
